IA…I wasn’t impressed with him at all yesterday. His very few minutes were not well played. In fact, those minutes when he did play were the worst for the team during the first half. However, I am for him getting more playing time for the same reasons I’d like Joy to get more…start building for the future.
I do wonder how many of these guys will be back next year. We have had major exoduses each year for awhile. But, this year, I’m not sure that as many will have the opportunity of being “signed on” to another school. It will come down to whether HCPM has them back…and, I get that it would be very difficult to turn loose an upper classman…I think it probalby goes against Mills’ instincts…and I get that.

As far as Memphis…they have bought a good team. As I said before, I think they have a chance to go far if they play consistently (and that’s a huge “if”).

And, although I truly don’t like the picture of them celebrating, I get it. This is a huge part of athletics right now (like it or not). When we played that song “You don’t want to go to war”, you have to expect that other teams will bring that right back into your face one way or another at some point. If we promote “Fear the Wheat” (as is on those shirts), you have to be ready to take that smack talk afterwards. Rather than ANY hype, I’d rather us just focus on playing sound basketball. Rather than spending tens of thousands of dollars on t-shirts (and so many laid unworn on the seats after the game), let’s spend the money more wisely (same for all of these promotions). Who knows…maybe we could buy more players as did Memphis.
Yea, i don't get the point about being upset about that picture. We created a promotion strictly for the Memphis game to try to drive a crazy atmosphere (didn't work) to affect them. They came in and completely dismantled us. Out talented, out played and out coached out. They left no doubt as to who was better on the court. TBH, I don't remember (though I didn't pay attention too much) too much trash talk or trashy celebrating on the court during or after the game. I saw more from Ridgnal than from Memphis. Them celebrating in their locker room is a non-story.

This isn't to say I think Memphis is a great clean program or anything .. they aren't .. but I didn't see anything yesterday on the court before/during/after the game that was out of line. If we don't want them celebrating in our locker rooms, we probably shouldn't let them make us look like a D2 team on our home court.

And, as I referenced, these t-shirt (or whatever) promotions ultimately look cheap and stupid with so many empty seats. Who is it inspiring? I remember HCGM didn’t like these striping events either.

If it’s not a strength and conditioning problem and it is that they just run out of gas, to me that speaks to the level of talent and that they are gutting out these close first halves.

        Otherwise it’s a staffing issue.

Not completely true. When it was a packed house, the color-outs and stripes popped. It was especially impressive when WSU didn’t have to give out shirts to get the desired appearance. Gregg was impressed by those.

But yeah, when you know that there is no chance of a sellout, the color-out/stripes idea looks lame. “I’m talkin’ NIGHT COURT in its 5th season Lame.”

          • I’ve watched Memphis play periodically throughout the year. They play defense about as well as us. They give up 74.4 ppg which is high. They’ve allowed bad teams like Vandy and Tulsa to score 75 on them. They let a horrid UTSA team hang 101 on them at home the other night. Hell, they gave up 86 to us and I wouldn’t say we are a “gifted” offensive team. Now I realize some of it may be based on the high pace games they generally play but they’re only scoring 81 ppg themselves. Their offense is really good but their defense probably won’t allow them to get out of the second round, when they actually play a team that can/will guard them.

Which is crazy because they have talented defensive players on the team.

I 1000% agree with this assessment of Memphis.....very susceptible to defensive minded athletic teams....

They're a top 10 program. Ranked above them is Kentucky, UCONN, UNC, and K|UCK-City... all documented, world-renown cheaters.

Wow! And there's Houston at #5. They're coached by one of the cheatingest coaches in NCAA history.

Preach on brother! Meanwhile we're tied for last place with Rice (Oh, but look at their research!) in the bottom of the WAC conference.

                    • the first half was encouraging. the second half, well, memphis was on fire.

memphis disrespected the shockers/shocker nation a little bit. i hope mills makes a mental note to take care of that. or did he even f*(&#$@ notice it?

You know what GM would say..."I'm book marking that one"

Bet we don't hear a peep out of Mills.

                        • I'm not sure the first half was really that encouraging. It took a superhuman offensive effort from a bad shooting Shocker team to just try and keep up with a team we couldn't slow down in either half.

WSU was hitting shots they don't normally make and won't likely make moving forward.
